Canal Plus Brings 4 Sports Channels To Africa, Will Expand Content On General Channels

French pay-TV operator Canal Plus Group added four sports channels, Canal Plus Sport 1, 2, 3 and 4, to its channel catalog in Africa, according to Malini Nagaraj of NEXTV. The company is betting "big" on the African market. Africa contributes nearly 20% to the company's sales. The sports channels will air popular French and int'l sports events and dedicated magazine programs. Football programming will include UEFA Champions League and Europa League, France's Ligue 1, English Premier League, Euro 2016 and the Copa América. It will also broadcast the NBA, Eurobasket, IAAF Diamond League athletics, French Top 14 rugby, Roland Garros, Wimbledon and ATP Masters tennis. Canal Plus will "also expand its content offerings on other general entertainment channels" (NEXTV, 7/22).
