Germans To Return To Melbourne Cup After Lifting Of Equine Travel Ban

The lifting of the equine travel ban in Germany this week "could give Australian Bloodstock runners in all three spring majors as it seeks to emulate last year’s Melbourne Cup win with Protectionist," according to Michael Manley of the HERALD SUN. Protectionist, trained by German Andreas Wohler to win the Cup before being handed over to Newcastle trainer Kris Lees, "is being aimed at a second Cup tilt." The ban on horses traveling out of Germany "was imposed early this year because of a case of the dangerous disease glanders." Now "it will be lifted, Wohler will bring Singing and Goldstream to Melbourne" (HERALD SUN, 7/21).
