Team Sky Believes Cyclist Chris Froome's Performance Data Hacked

Team Sky believes that hackers have tapped into cyclist Chris Froome's performance data and are "using it to try to discredit the Tour de France leader," according to Matt Dickinson of the LONDON TIMES. Team Principal Dave Brailsford revealed that lawyers are "looking into how sensitive information was leaked." Froome's numbers, such as power data, are "known to only a select number of staff, so Sky have been perturbed to see figures appear on social media and other outlets." Brailsford said, "We think someone has hacked into our training data and got Chris' files, so we've got some legal guys on the case there." Allegations have been "thrown at Froome based on his speed up various climbs, and the necessary power output," and Brailsford believes that the 2013 Tour champion is being "attacked on the back of data obtained illegally." Brailsford: "Ethically and morally, if you are going to accuse someone of doping, then don’t cheat." The revelation "comes as Froome prepares to head into the high mountains of the Pyrenees" on Tuesday when the performances of the leading riders will "attract fresh scrutiny." Brailsford added, "It's part of the game, isn’t it? If he does well tomorrow, the rest of the Tour it's 'How do you know he's not doping?'" (LONDON TIMES, 7/14). In London, Tom Cary wrote Sky is "circling the wagons, with sniping at the British team on Twitter and in newsprint." Monday’s edition of L’Equipe "featured a story about Sky's cavalcade of vehicles" at this year's Tour de France, which includes "un mega Pullman-restaurant" and "trois immenses motorhomes." Sky is "thought to have around 30 vehicles in total, which has upset rival teams" that claim it clogs up hotel car parks. But it is "espionage of a more serious nature" that has "really set the alarm bells ringing at Team Sky, with the suspected hacking of Froome's training files." Brailsford "declined to say who he believed to be behind the hacking." Before this Tour, Froome "criticised the 'clowns' on social media who tried to interpret power data, saying it was meaningless without context" (TELEGRAPH, 7/14). Also in London, Robert Woodward reported Froome was "repeatedly questioned during the 2013 Tour, which he won, about his performances and attitude to doping." The 30-year-old Team Sky leader has "always insisted he competes clean." The team was under surveillance on Sunday by photographers "hoping to catch Froome going to sleep in Brailsford’s motorhome in Pau." The former British Cycling performance director has "brought his personal motorhome to the Tour, giving him a base to work and allowing him to sleep in the same environment every night" (GUARDIAN, 7/13).
