Four Months Later, Brazilian Financial Fair Play Yet To Enforce Reports Of Misconduct

In March, the Brazilian Football Federation (CBF) confirmed the inclusion of financial fair play in the Campeonato Brasileiro's regulations; however, despite delayed salary payments from clubs, "not one report has been made" to the Supreme Court of Sporting Justice (STJD), according to Ronald Lincoln, Jr. of ESTADÃO. For example, Santos players last month exposed their "lack of payments." Currently, despite delays, Santos players have "avoided criticizing the board of directors for considering that the economic crisis was created under previous management." Similarly, Fluminense, which lost a sponsor at the end of last year, announced that its debts are settled, but "admitted that there were payment delays" this season. CBF regulations state that clubs "would have 15 days" to complete late financial obligations, thus "avoiding the deduction of three points per match." The regulations also state that affected players must be the ones to "report against their own clubs," which is the "flaw of the financial fair play." Player movement Bom Senso FC lawyer Fernando Baptista said, "And what if the athlete makes the report and the club loses the three points that leads it to relegation? ... The correct way would be to have the club prove that all of its debts are settled and up-to-date in order to participate in competitions" (ESTADÃO, 7/12).
