New NBL Exec Dir Larry Kestelman To Bounce Into New TV Deal

Larry Kestelman, the new exec director of Australia's National Basketball League, is "cautiously optimistic" about securing a broadcast rights deal, according to Jon Pierik of the SYDNEY MORNING HERALD. Kestelman, the multi-millionaire owner of Melbourne United who has "taken a controlling interest in the NBL" after a A$6M ($5M) takeover, is "working feverishly to secure a major broadcast deal in time for the new season," which begins in October. The partnership with Channel Ten ended after the '14-15 season, with Ten "indicating it was not interested in renewing the contract." The NBL has "sought the help" of leading media rights consultant Shane Mattiske to help broker a deal. Kestelman: "I am cautiously confident ... I really believe whoever will take this on will look at this as a longer-term proposition." Kestelman would like to "have all matches in the eight-team league broadcast live." A new deal is a "must if Kestelman is to truly shed what he says has been a 'scariness' among potential sponsors and investors" to be involved in a league that has "struggled for major media attention" since the late '90s (SMH, 6/23).
