Event Notes: North Korea Will Not Attend 2015 Gwangju Universiade

The organizers of the 2015 Gwangju Universiade said on Monday that they received an email from North Korea "suggesting it would not attend the student games." Gwangju Summer Universiade Organizing Committee (GUOC) Secretary General Kim Yoon-suk said that the email was sent from the head of North Korea's university sports federation, listed by the Int'l University Sports Federation (FISU) as a recipient, but the FISU has yet to "receive the same e-mail, adding that the organizers and the Ministry of Unification are working to confirm the correspondence's authenticity." In the email, North Korea said that it will not attend the Gwangju Universiade because of the "planned opening of a U.N. Human Rights office in Seoul this week" (KOREA TIMES, 6/22). ... The Indian cricket team's tour to Zimbabwe next month has been "rendered doubtful" with the Board of Control for Cricket in India saying that the limited-overs series could be "postponed to next year if the ongoing issues between the board and broadcaster Ten Sports are not resolved anytime soon." The "fatigue" of the Indian players, who have been "playing continuous cricket over the past six to seven months, may also be another reason for the tour’s likely abandonment." India was scheduled to play three One Day Internationals and two T20 Internationals in Zimbabwe from July 10 (PTI, 6/22).
