Olympic Notes: Japan Vows To Create Barrier-Free 2020 Olympics

A Japan government white paper said that the country "vowed to make every effort to create a barrier-free environment" for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics. The white paper on disabled people said that, for graying Japan, which will "become a superaging society, aiming for a more symbiotic community is a very important task." The government has "set up an 'accessibility council'" with the Tokyo Organizing Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government and groups representing the disabled. The council is "working to ensure barrier-free access to and the use of athletic facilities and event sites" (JIJI, 6/17). ... The venue location for rugby at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 has been confirmed. Rugby will be played at Tokyo Stadium, which has previously staged several big rugby matches. The 45,000-seater stadium is centrally located, has transport links and is well-known to generate the sort of atmosphere that has become the hall-mark of int'l rugby sevens in recent years (Australian Rugby).
