Former Barcelona President Joan Laporta To Run For Club's Presidency

Former Barcelona President Joan Laporta has announced that he "will run for the club's presidency again in this summer's elections," according to the PA. The election will take place on July 18. Laporta was president from '03-10, hiring popular managers Frank Rijkaard and Pep Guardiola, "with both men securing Champions League glory for the Catalans." However, the 52-year-old was "not always popular at the Camp Nou and only just survived a vote of no confidence" in '08 before losing the '10 presidential election to Sandro Rosell. But in announcing his desire to "seek a second spell at the helm," Laporta said that he was "more prepared than ever'' to direct the club again, believing he has "more experience" than he did 12 years ago. Laporta: "I have more experience. I have my faults, most of you already know about them, but I have kept the same principles and those principles are those same ones that belong to the idea of 'Mes que un club.' Those of [Johan] Cruyff, La Masia, Catalonia and of UNICEF." He explained that one of the reasons he is running for the presidency with the slogan "The club can be for everyone again" is "the support of so many Barca fans he has received over many years." Laporta's main competition for the top job will be incumbent Josep Maria Bartomeu, who took over last January following the resignation of Rosell (ESPN, 6/17). MARCA reported Laporta posted a video on his social media channels in which he confirmed that he is "putting his name in the hat for Barcelona's presidential elections." His announcement takes the list of potential candidates "up to six." Bartomeu is running for re-election, "while the pack is completed" by Jordi Majó, a candidate in the '03 elections; Toni Freixa, a former club spokesperson; Jordi Farré, leader of the group 'Som gent normal' (We're Normal People); and Agustí Benedito, who finished second in the '10 elections that Rosell won. The next step is for each candidate to obtain the 2,354 signatures required to stand for election (MARCA, 6/16).
