Names In The News

NEYMAR "attracted a lot of attention" after the Champions League final when he "wore a headband that said '100% Jesus' on his head during the celebration" of Barcelona's win. Fans on social media "accused" Neymar of "religious proselytism." Internet users said he was "'ridiculous' and criticized the Brazilian's attempt of 'imposing' his religion on others" (SPORTV, 6/9). ... Arsenal footballer JACK WILSHERE has "defended his behaviour" during Arsenal’s FA Cup parade and believes that the decision to charge him with misconduct is "harsh." The England midfielder has until 6pm local time on Wednesday to "respond to the FA charge that he brought the game into disrepute by leading a chant encouraging Arsenal fans to describe Tottenham Hotspur as 's***' the day after winning the FA Cup." Wilshere is "unlikely to contest the charge or request a personal hearing, meaning that he will probably receive a small fine" (LONDON TIMES, 6/9). ... GAIZKA GARITANO "won't remain" as La Liga side Eibar coach despite the club "avoiding relegation after Elche were sent down for non-payment of tax." Los Armeros were "condemned on the final day of the season and Garitano announced his resignation almost immediately," with Marca noting his contract would have been "renewed if Eibar stayed up." The Basque club was "granted a reprieve when a judge relegated Elche" but Eibar President ALEX ARANZABAL has since "confirmed Garitano won’t be returning" (FOOTBALL ESPANA, 6/9) ... The Professional Footballers' Association confirmed that former England defender KENNY SANSOM has "entered a detox programme to help him beat alcoholism and a gambling addiction." Now 56, Sansom said that he has "contemplated suicide after becoming homeless." His "battle with alcoholism is well documented." PFA Head of Player Welfare MICHAEL BENNETT confirmed that the union has "taken formal steps to help Sansom, using the organisation’s close links to establishments" such as the Sporting Chance clinic, founded by the former Arsenal defender TONY ADAMS (LONDON TIMES, 6/8). ... KOBE BRYANT will be "part of Sina's pregame and postgame livestream of Game 3 of the NBA Finals in China." The Lakers player will "provide analysis before and after Tuesday night's game," joining host HUANG SHUO remotely from L.A. (AP, 6/8). ... Authorities said that South African athlete OSCAR PISTORIUS will be "released on parole on Aug. 21 after serving 10 months of a five-year sentence for culpable homicide" of his girlfriend REEVA STEENKAMP. Pistorius' release has been "largely expected under South African sentencing guidelines that say non-dangerous prisoners should spend only one-sixth of a custodial sentence behind bars" (REUTERS, 6/8).

RECORD AND RULE BREAKINGBRADLEY WIGGINS' new hour record has "caused controversy, with a coach of the man whose record he beat accusing Wiggins of using an illegal bike and criticising British Cycling for being 'too involved' in his bid." Wiggins broke ALEX DOWSETT's Int'l Cycling Union (UCI) Hour record at the Olympic Velodrome on Sunday by more than 1.5km. Athlon Sport Owner STEVE COLLINS, a "long-time friend of Dowsett, believes that Wiggins’s Pinarello Bolide HR bike, which featured custom-made 3D printed titanium handlebars, was illegal" (London TELEGRAPH, 6/8). Key members of the bike and coaching team behind Wiggins have "poured cold water" on claims that the aerodynamic bike used to beat Dowsett's time set in May broke equipment regulations and that he received preferential treatment from British Cycling. A source close to the Wiggins bid said, "We had to do full documentation for the UCI detailing every component; every bit of the bike and kit was approved by the UCI down to the shoes, helmet and skinsuit. The bike is fully approved by the UCI" (London GUARDIAN, 6/9).

ON THE POLITICAL END: Former Mexican footballer CUAUHTEMOC BLANCO "appeared poised to score a victory in his political debut, leading the race for mayor" in the city of Cuernavaca. Running for the small Social Democratic Party, Blanco had 25.6% of the votes compared to 21.4% for his closest opponent, MARICELA VELAZQUEZ SANCHEZ. The former national team player, who only retired at the age of 42 in April, "used choice words to declare himself the winner late on Sunday." Speaking of his opponents, he said, "I screwed them" (AFP, 6/8). ... French PM MANUEL VALLS is "defending himself against accusations from within his party that he's leading a jet-setting lifestyle inappropriate for a Socialist." Valls "used a state-owned jet Saturday to attend the Champions League final" between Barcelona -- a team he supports -- and Juventus in Berlin (AP, 6/9).
