Brazilian Authority Of Doping Control To Monitor 200 Olympic Athletes

With the goal of running 2,500 drug tests this year to "guarantee a clean competition" at the 2016 Olympics, the Brazilian Authority of Doping Control (ABCD) disclosed a list of 200 athletes, called the Grupo Alvo (Target Group), that it will monitor, according to GLOBO ESPORTE. ABCD said that it "did not include some of the bigger names" in Brazilian sport, such as swimmer César Cielo and gymnast Arthur Zanetti, because they are "already on doping-monitored lists for their respective international federations." However, other athletes that are not included in those 200 names "can also be tested." The difference is that the Grupo Alvo "must keep their locations registered and establish a window of time in which they can daily" be available for testing. Should an athlete be unavailable when called in for a test, it will be "registered" as a failure to appear. Three missed tests result in a 12-month suspension. In accordance with the World Anti-Doping Agency, each member of the Grupo Alvo "should be subjected to a minimum of three exams every 12 months" (GLOBO ESPORTE, 6/8).
