CBF President Calls General Assembly To Discuss CBF Election, Succession Statutes

Brazilian Football Federation (CBF) President Marco Polo Del Nero has called a CBF general assembly on Thursday with federation representatives, with the topic of discussion being "re-election for CBF presidency," according to Leite, Junior, Dolzan & Lincoln of ESTADÃO. Del Nero indicated covering "possible changes in the electoral process" during Thursday's meeting, in which they will "discuss and deliberate partial reforms" to CBF statutes (ESTADÃO, 6/3). In a separate piece, Leite, Junior, Dolzan & Lincoln wrote Del Nero is "beginning to prepare his exit from the CBF." He could "even announce his resignation" during Thursday's meeting. For that reason, he is "trying to reach an agreement for a successor." The "problem, in this case," is that Del Nero "wants to leave someone he trusts in power," which would be Capixaba Football Federation (FES) President Marcus Vicente. However, according to CBF statutes, Del Nero's successor would be Catarinense Football Federation (FCF) President Delfim Peixoto "for being the oldest of the vice presidents, after José Maria Marin was removed from the governing body." Peixoto said, "This move for changing the rules is to impose my presidency, but I won't be silenced" (ESTADÃO, 6/3). In São Paulo, Silvio Barsetti wrote Peixoto said that he is "convinced that Del Nero will resign." Peixoto: "I have come to the conclusion that he will resign. I thought that he would continue, but I was mistaken." Peixoto said that he "was not invited" to Thursday's meeting, which was the "start" of Del Nero's plan to avoid his succession. Del Nero's "preferred candidate for CBF presidency would be" Vicente (TERRA, 6/3).

IMPOSSIBLE: LANCENET's Igor Siqueira wrote Del Nero's invitation to Thursday's general assembly "left a question mark above certain leaders' heads." CBF Secretary General Walter Feldman said that Del Nero "will not be leaving his post" on Thursday. Feldman said, "There is zero possibility [of that]. It's only changes to current rules" (LANCENET, 6/3).
