Brazilian Former Footballer, Senator Romário Leads Drive For FIFA Probe

Brazil's upper house has "voted to launch a congressional inquiry into corruption allegations" relating to the Brazilian Football Federation (CBF) and its hosting of the 2014 World Cup, according to Joe Leahy of the FINANCIAL TIMES. The move comes as Brazil's federal police "launch a parallel investigation" into charges brought by the U.S. against officials of FIFA, which include former CBF President José Maria Marin. Brazilian former footballer and Senator Romário tweeted, "With the passage of the days, numerous scandals involving the realization of football championships in [the Americas] will be revealed." Brazil’s senate inquiry will "mark the first attempt to probe" the country's hosting of the 2014 World Cup and its dress-rehearsal event, the 2013 Confederations Cup, and will "help create political support for the parallel police inquiries." In a speech to the senate supporting the congressional inquiry, Romário said that the U.S. FIFA investigation had "created a chance to crack open the underworld of domestic football." Romário: "Marin is under arrest and this is an opportune moment for us to conduct a sweeping inquest into the CBF" (FT, 5/31). In São Paulo, Daniel Carvalho reported after 15 years, congress will "go back to investigating the involvement" of the CBF in the FIFA corruption scheme. A congressional inquiry (CPI) "could be launched by the Senate this week." Parliament "believes that the scenario is now more favorable to a thorough investigation." Romário said, "I don't have any personal want for prosecution. I go after what isn't right, of what is corrupt, and he (CBF President Marco Polo Del Nero) is part of that corruption group within football. ... It'll be called the CPI of Football. Whatever is directly or indirectly linked to football will be investigated." For the CPI to pass, it "will need 171 signatures from deputies and 27 from senators" (ESTADÃO, 5/31).
