LPFP President Announces New Referee Goal-Detection Technology

Portuguese Professional Football League (LPFP) President Luís Duque said that the "technological innovations that will be introduced" during the Primera Liga Cup final are "fundamental for the truth and transparency of football," according to LUSA. Duque said, "Some people think that errors are a part of football, but I think that errors are only a part of it if we are incapable of avoiding it. While it's still in our hands to avoid it, I think we should use all available technology [to do so]." On Friday, a system of technology will be "available on the goal line, which gives the referee, in doubtful cases, help in making the decision whether the ball has passed the goal line or not." The system will have "seven cameras installed at the top of the stadium and wristwatches, worn by members of the refereeing team, that vibrate and detect if the ball" goes over the goal line. Duque: "Let's make the model more attractive, not just for those who participate [in the game], but also for those who transmit and for our sponsors" (LUSA, 5/26).
