Korean Basketball League Anyang KGC Coach Under Investigation For Match-Fixing

Korean Basketball League side Anyang KGC coach Jeon Chang-jin is "under investigation for allegedly rigging a game involving his team in connection with an illegal online bet," according to Nam Hyun-woo of the KOREA TIMES. Seoul Jungbu police said that Jeon has allegedly "bet hundreds of millions of won against his own team on an illegal sports betting website while he was coaching the KT Sonicboom" during the '14-15 season. After the season, he moved to his current team. Police suspect that Jeon had "substituted second-tier players during decisive moments of a number of games" in February and March. The police found that Jeon had bet at least 300M won ($273,000). Two persons were "detained for allegedly helping Jeon borrow the money from a loan shark" (KOREA TIMES, 5/26). YONHAP reported at a press conference, KBL Secretary General Lee Jae-min said that the league has been "asked by police to provide relevant information and that the KBL has supplied video clips of the games in question, among other materials." Lee also said that the league, which earlier "issued a public apology for the scandal, doesn’t know much more than what has been reported in the media." Lee: "We first became aware of the situation through a report last night, and we've not been in touch with Jeon himself. What we do know at this point is that Jeon has been implicated in illegal gambling allegations." Lee added that the KBL will "take stern steps as necessary" if Jeon is "found to have fixed games" (YONHAP, 5/26).
