Rio Construction Workers' Strike Ends, Does Not Delay Olympic Construction

Rio de Janeiro's Heavy Construction Workers Trade Union's (SITRAICP) strike "ended on Wednesday," according to José Geraldo Azevedo of SPORTV. A deal "was arranged to readjust the workers' salaries by 8%," when the original amount requested was 8.5%. The deal also sees that the food basket, a full-time employee benefit, will be worth R$340 ($111) instead of R$310 ($102), only R$10 ($3.30) "short of what workers requested." According to Rio de Janeiro Mayor Eduardo Paes, the strike "did not cause delays to Olympic construction." SITRAICP President Nilson Costa said, "We won't be extreme, it's not what the workers want" (SPORTV, 5/21).
