The Rio de Janeiro city government has now "taken up the responsibility of one more Olympic cost" -- temporary seating in three stadiums: the Center for Aquatic Sports, the handball arena and the Nilton Santos stadium -- for R$30M ($10M) of "public money," according to Vinicius Konchinski of UOL. However, during Rio de Janeiro's Olympic bid, it was "said that this cost would be paid for by the Rio 2016 organizing committee, a private organization." In total, more than 37,500 temporary chairs "will be placed" in the three arenas. The Center for Aquatic Sports "will need 13,500 temporary seats" while the the handball arena "will receive 12,000 seats." The two arenas, though, "will be demolished" post-Games. However, the Nilton Santos will "receive 12,000" removable seats to be installed its north section, since the stadium will not be demolished after the Olympics. Should Rio 2016 be unable to cover the remaining seating costs, as it has already "delayed the installation of temporary seating" in the Deodoro Olympic Park, local government will "host a bid" for privatized services (UOL, 5/13).
