ABCD In Partnership Talks With Brazilian Intelligence; LBCD Receives $63M Investment

The Brazilian Authority of Doping Control (ABCD) is "in talks" with the Brazilian federal police and the Brazilian Intelligence Agency (ABIN) so they can "focus in on the origin of the problem: the providers of substances prohibited to athletes," according to Daniel Brito of UOL. ABIN and federal police "can help ABCD" in order to "avoid" substances from reaching athletes. ABCD President Marco Aurélio Klein said, "We've already held meetings to discuss intelligence services, to avoid actions of providers together with athletes and coaches." Klein has been "studying the terms of the partnership" between the German police and the German National Anti-doping Agency (NADA). He added, "They (the Germans) have a lot of work and its really efficient. I'm analyzing the Germans' case, we may be able to utilize some of those actions here" (UOL, 5/14).

STATE OF THE ART: FOLHA DE SÃO PAULO reported the Brazilian Doping Control Laboratory (LBCD), which was accredited by the World Anti-Doping Agency on Wednesday, was "totally renovated thanks to an investment" of R$188M ($62.6M) from the federal government. The Brazilian sports ministry paid R$160M ($53.3M) while the education ministry paid R$28M ($9.3M). The sports ministry said that LBCD's equipment "was outdated" (FOLHA DE SÃO PAULO, 5/13).
