FA Rejects Sponsorship From Qatar Airways Over World Cup Concerns

The FA "turned down the chance of having Qatari sponsors" for its flagship cup competition because of concerns about being "associated with the 2022 World Cup hosts," according to Charles Sale of the London DAILY MAIL. A £30M ($46M) three-year deal with Emirates Airlines to back the FA Cup is due to be completed this month but the FA board "would not countenance a similar contract with their Middle East rivals Qatar Airways at any price." Qatar's interest in sponsoring the FA Cup was put to the board last November but was "quickly rejected." Since the "infamous, murky vote" in '10 that granted Qatar the World Cup, the FA has "led the opposition to the FIFA regime that allowed such an allegedly corrupt election." Nevertheless, there was no way the FA "wanted to be linked with Qatar via a high-profile sponsorship." At the time Qatar was turned down, there was "less resistance from FA directors to a betting company sponsoring the tournament, which some might regard as just as bad" (DAILY MAIL, 5/5).
