Names In The News

Former Real Madrid President RAMÓN CALDERÓN faces three charges for crimes he allegedly committed during his tenure with the club from '06-09. Calderón is accused of "disloyal administration" for "alleged vote-rigging of a member assembly" in '08. He also faces charges of "falsifying accounts" and fraud for "utilizing club money for family vacations" (MARCA, 5/5). ... Olympic alpine skiing champion LINDSEY VONN will be "appointed an honorary ambassador for the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Games." The PyeongChang organizing committee said the U.S. skier will be the first int'l athlete to be "named an honorary spokesperson for the first Winter Games to be held in South Korea" (YONHAP, 5/4). ... JONATHAN TROTT retired from int'l cricket on Monday, "admitting that his batting was no longer up to the standard required to play for England." He will continue to play for Warwickshire (London TELEGRAPH, 5/4). ... Cambodian PM HUN SEN, the former Khmer Rouge commander and premier of more than 30 years, is refusing to pay up on a $5,000 bet on MANNY PACQUIAO, claiming that FLOYD MAYWEATHER's points win "was unfair." Grandstanding by the "loquacious" Sen is a regular "feature of Cambodian political life." But his "voluntary disclosure of the wager is nonetheless striking -- especially as gambling by Cambodians is illegal" (FINANCIAL TIMES, 5/5).

FOUR MORE YEARS: JOSÉ MOURINHO and Chelsea are "ready to conclude talks over a new contract" with a view to keeping the manager at Stamford Bridge until '19. Mourinho's current deal expires in two years but after "clinching" the Premier League title, there is a "will from both sides to swiftly complete a two-year extension." Mourinho is the "highest-paid manager in the Premier League and can expect to be handed improved terms" on the current £12.5M ($19M) he earns per year (London DAILY MAIL, 5/5).

RECOVERY PERIOD: Pacquiao “will undergo surgery this week for a torn rotator cuff, with the recovery time expected to put the Filipino out of action for 9-12 months.” The injury “would appear to rule out any chance of a rematch” after Mayweather said that “he would have one more fight in September before retiring.” Orthopedic surgeon NEAL ELATTRACHE said, "We have an MRI scan that confirms he has a rotator cuff tear. He has a significant tear” (REUTERS, 5/5). The fallout from the fight “became murkier” on Monday with possible lawsuits in the works and Pacquiao “likely to face disciplinary action for failing to disclose a pre-bout shoulder injury.” Barely one hour after the contest ended, Pacquiao's promoter, BOB ARUM, said that “the 36-year-old southpaw had been hampered by an 'old' injury to his right shoulder.” The major problem “is that apparently neither Pacquiao nor his team informed the Nevada Athletic Commission about the shoulder issue until a couple of hours before the start of the fight when they asked for an anti-inflammatory injection.” The fact that Pacquiao did not disclose his injury until the night of the fight “could also lead to possible lawsuits from boxing fans who feel cheated after paying record sums for either tickets in the MGM Grand Garden Arena or pay-for-view” (REUTERS, 5/5).
