Olympic Notes: IOC President Thomas Bach Says New Zealand Could Host Olympics

IOC President Thomas Bach said that "there is no reason why New Zealand could not put its hand up" to host the Games. Bach said, ''You cannot restrict the right to host the Olympics to just 20 countries. The Olympic Games are universal and we should open doors and windows." However, New Zealand Olympic Committee President Mike Stanley pointed out that "there are significant issues which the country would face in even considering hosting a Games." Not only the number of athletes, entourages, media and spectators would present challenges, but "it would be about how to make it a success in social and economic terms" (NZ HERALD, 5/5). ... The Int'l Paralympic Committee and the Int'l Federation of Sport Medicine (FIMS) extended their partnership agreement for a further five and a half years, taking it beyond the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games. The two organizations identified a number of collaborative areas to improve the health, safety, research and performance of para-athletes. This includes identifying areas of common interests in research and working collaboratively to promote and advance new scientific and clinical discovery (IPC). ... The move to oust Indian Olympic Association President N. Ramachandran on Tuesday "gathered steam as two National Sports Federation and two state Olympic Association joined the chorus in demanding a No Confidence Motion against him by calling a Special General Meeting." Two NSFs, Badminton Association of India and Modern Pentathlon "shot off letters to the IOA to convene a Special General Meeting to vote on the No Confidence Motion against Ramachandran while the state Olympic associations of Bihar and Uttar Pradesh did the same" (PTI, 5/5).
