IOC President Thomas Bach In Favor Of Brisbane Olympic Games Bid

IOC President Thomas Bach said on Wednesday that "the expected Olympic bid by Brisbane would be warmly received, because of the high standard Australia set in staging the Sydney 2000 Games," according to Margie McDonald of THE AUSTRALIAN. But it seems "the enthusiasm for Brisbane to host the 2028 Olympics is not shared by some local government officials in southeast Queensland." Of the 12 mayors in the region, who have met to discuss the '28 proposal, "only one is travelling to Sydney" to meet Bach and other IOC officials. Although the bidding process for the 2028 Games does not formally begin until '19, with the winner announced in '21, "it would seem reasonable for southeast Queensland officials to make the one-hour plane trip to greet Bach and his team, who are based in Lausanne." Bach "is making a flying two-day visit to Sydney en-route to the Oceania National Olympic Committees general assembly in Fiji this weekend." The 61-year-old had a "trip down memory lane" Wednesday to Sydney Olympic Park, where he had not been since the Sydney Games closing ceremony on Oct. 1, 2000. He said that "it was not too soon for Australia to stage the Olympics for a third time." Melbourne "first hosted in 1956." He said that "the only other country to raise its hand for the 2028 Games was India" (THE AUSTRALIAN, 4/30). In Sydney, Chris Barrett wrote the chance to meet face-to-face with Bach has been passed up by most, "with Brisbane Lord Mayor Graham Quirk among those to skip Thursday's meeting." Sunshine Coast Mayor Mark Jamieson "was understood to be the only one of the 12 coming to Sydney to speak to Bach." Quirk defended his absence, saying that the IOC "had cancelled a scheduled sit-down in Brisbane and moved it to Sydney." He "will instead take part over the phone." Quirk: "I won't be canceling pre-existing diary appointments at short notice, but instead have arranged to participate in the one-hour meeting via teleconference and look forward to holding discussions with Dr. Bach. The Council of Mayors is getting on with conducting a feasibility study during the next year into hosting the 2028 Summer Olympics and the IOC expressions of interest for those Games will be called for in 2019" (SMH, 4/29).

BID TALKS: REUTERS' Nick Mulvenney wrote Bach said that the IOC "is in talks with a fifth city in addition to Boston, Hamburg, Rome and Paris over a possible bid to host the 2024 Summer Games." Bach: "Boston, Hamburg and Rome have formerly declared and there are strong signals coming from France with Paris and we're in talks with one other city so the field very strong. ... There are also countries not among the four I mentioned who showed interest." The Qatari capital Doha, Turkish city of Istanbul and Romanian capital Bucharest "are among the cities which have expressed interest in hosting the 2024 Olympics without formally declaring bids." National Olympic Committees "must register the name of applicant cities for 2024 by Sept. 15 this year and the host city will be decided by an IOC vote in Lima, Peru two years later" (REUTERS, 4/29).
