Int'l Sailing Federation May Move 2016 Olympic Sailing From Polluted Guanabara Bay

The Int'l Sailing Federation "gave another warning" to Rio de Janeiro concerning the trash and water quality of the Guanabara Bay in relation to the upcoming Olympic Games, according to GLOBO ESPORTE. ISAF Head of Competitions Alastair Fox "showed frustration with the situation" and said that there is a "possibility of moving the location of the regattas" during the 2016 Games. Fox said that two other sailing locations "are just outside of Baía" state. Fox: "If we have to sail outside of Baía, then that's what we'll do to guarantee a fair regatta. ... We're going to analyze the situation and make some recommendations to guarantee that things are done. The main point is that we need to have fair Olympics and we need to be sure that our sailors don't run any health risks and that we have a decent competition." However, the Rio 2016 organizing committee "reaffirmed its confidence" that the Guanabara Bay would be "apt to host" the Games. In a statement, Rio 2016 said, "The [Rio de Janeiro] State Government is working to attain the best results and the Committee acts so that it is a priority, even after the Games. The quality of the water in the competition areas and the protection of the athletes' health are non-negotiable." Local authorities said that "49% of the Guanabara Bay waters have been treated" (GLOBO ESPORTE, 4/26).
