Rio Olympics Costs Rise By $170M For Legacy Projects, Totals $13B

The 2016 Olympic Games' cost rose by R$500M ($169M), totaling R$38.2B ($13B), according to the AE. The increase refers to "legacy projects," in addition to R$24.6B ($8.3B) for public works, R$6.6B ($2.2B) for Olympic insallations and the R$7B ($2.4B) budget for the Rio 2016 organizing committee to "run the Games." The cost of R$38.2B "is not set in stone as not all Olympic construction is budgeted." The Olympic legacy projects are made up of "27 infrastructures, 14 of which are the responsibility of the Rio de Janeiro city government, 10 of the state government and three of the federal government." Rio de Janeiro Mayor Eduardo Paes said, "These right here (legacy projects), even if they aren't ready in time, we could still host the Olympics. But the city took advantage of the opportunity" (AE, 4/24).
