FFA Finds A-League Side Perth Glory Chair Responsible For Salary Cap Breaches

A-League side Perth Glory Chair Tony Sage "will not be exonerated from the salary cap scandal" after Football Federation Australia ruled his club was "guilty of a 'complete breakdown in proper corporate governance' for the series of breaches that ended the club's push for a first A-League title," according to Dominic Bossi of the SYDNEY MORNING HERALD. Despite former Glory CEO Jason Brewer "accepting sole responsibility for the breaches" when he announced his resignation on Friday, FFA issued a statement alleging Sage's involvement based on "negligence of the financial operations of the football club." FFA CEO David Gallop "suggested Sage's alleged lack of knowledge of the club's expenditure and payment methods was 'obviously unacceptable' for a chairman of an A-League club." Throughout the process, Sage has "expressed no knowledge of the series of breaches that expelled the club from the A-League finals series." However, FFA "criticised the lack of awareness" of Sage and the "poor scrutiny" of the Perth Glory board. Gallop: "At the very least he says that there were times when he had his hands off the wheel, which is obviously unacceptable. So now we have both the CEO and the chairman taking responsibility for what led to the salary cap breaches. All of that points to a complete breakdown in proper corporate governance" (SMH, 4/20).
