CBF President Demands Medida Provisória Changes; Bom Senso 'Fights' Back

Brazilian Football Federation (CBF) President Marco Polo Del Nero took charge of his new post on Thursday with "at least one consensus between the clubs and federations: the Medida Provisória, which deals with the refinancing of Brasileiro clubs' debt, needs to be altered," according to Dolzan & Leite of ESTADÃO. Del Nero "defended changes to the text" of the MP to which the clubs currently "will not adhere." The MP was a topic of discussion during a ceremony that "brought together leaders of clubs and federations" to the CBF HQ. Brasileiro side Botafogo Football VP Antônio Carlos Mantuano said, "President Marco Polo gave a lot of emphasis on the MP. We need to revisit the financial portion of the clubs" (ESTADÃO, 4/16). In São Paulo, Iannacca & Seda reported those present at the CBF meeting Thursday "praised the plan of the new president, who substituted José Maria Marin, giving emphasis on financial 'fair-play.'" Del Nero: "Advancement, modernization, legality. Encouragement for responsible management of the clubs. The search for governing rules. Opening, security, jurisdiction. Conscience of your social function. These are the slogans of the new CBF. This will be the new Brazilian football" (GLOBO ESPORTE, 4/16). In Rio de Janeiro, SPORTV reported just as Del Nero, Brasileiro side Flamengo President Eduardo Bandeira de Mello "thickened the request for changes to the MP" but said that he "believes in a 'happy ending.'" Bandeira de Mello: "I'm optimistic, I believe it is possible if everyone gives in, if there is no radicalism, a solution will arrive that will be good for everyone. ... I think in this process exists room for negotiation, if anything changes in the MP, without changing the main point, which is what we have been seeking the whole time, that is the introduction of management rules, of responsibility, so that clubs can, from this point forward, remain in line ... . So they can adapt to this new regulation reality, the [debt] payment plan is very welcomed" (SPORTV, 4/16).

NOT WITHOUT A FIGHT: In São Paulo, GLOBO ESPORTE reported the "fight" between the CBF and Brazilian football player movement Bom Senso "is far from over." The group that represents players "released a disavowal of the positioning" of the clubs and the CBF in relation to the MP. Bom Senso "showed counterpoints to various points presented in the document and claimed that the measure is a governmental enforcement, making it unconstitutional." The group said that Del Nero "is playing a 'dirty game.'" Bom Senso said, "Democracy, transparency and responsibility. These are the three pillars of the MP. The CBF has fought against these" (GLOBO ESPORTE, 4/17).
