League Notes: National Rugby League Players Unlikely To Support Publicizing Contracts

National Rugby League players "would need to be convinced that the benefits of having their contracts publicly listed would outweigh privacy concerns" before "following the lead of their counterparts" in professional sporting competitions in the U.S. Australian Athletes Alliance General Secretary Brendan Schwab "raised the idea" and said that the "move 'would also be in the interests of the players' and 'improve the transparency and accountability of the professional leagues.'" However, the Rugby League Players' Association, which is one of eight players' associations from major Australian sports in the AAA, said NRL players were "unlikely to support having their contract details made public" (SYDNEY MORNING HERALD, 4/14). ... National Rugby League side Canberra Raiders coach Ricky Stuart has "described Canberra as a footballing 'battleground,'" calling on the NRL to "invest more in promoting rugby league matches and highlighting the disparity in financial incentives provided" to the Australian Football League by the ACT Government. In a letter written to "thank the club's 'die-hard' members in the region," Stuart also "vented his frustration" that the NRL and ACT Government were not doing more to promote rugby league and the Raiders. The Raiders have "long been critical" of the ACT Government's 10-year deal with AFL club Greater Western Sydney, which receives more than A$23M ($18M) to "host four games a season" (CANBERRA TIMES, 4/14). ... Reigning London marathon champion Wilson Kipsang has "hit out at Kenya's athletics authority for suspending his foreign agent without informing him." Kipsang said that Athletics Kenya was "fighting with fire." Two leading sports agencies have been "suspended for six months by AK" as the organization "investigates Kenya's recent doping troubles" (BBC, 4/14).

SAFETY FIRST: The Int'l Cycling Union (UCI) and the World Federation of the Sporting Goods Industry announced that, following numerous consultations with different stakeholders, tests will begin this season with a view to introducing disc brakes to professional road cycling in the future. During the 2015 UCI professional road season, all teams will have the opportunity to use bikes with disc brakes at two events of their choice during August and September. The testing will continue in '16 at all events on the UCI professional road calendar (UCI). ... Welsh Rugby Union National Medical Manager Prav Mathema "does not believe players wearing mandatory headguards -- as has been called for in some quarters -- would help reduce head injuries." Mathema: "Concussion is incredibly serious, and the number one thing in our sport which needs our attention of all the governing bodies. ... We don't think it would be useful for headguards to become mandatory. Headguards are there to deal with lacerations. There is no evidence to show headguards will reduce concussive episodes" (PA, 4/14).
