La Liga Side Elche Fails To Pay Off Debts To Creditors, Awaits Sanctions

The sum of €5M ($5.38M) that La Liga side Elche on Monday announced it was expecting to receive "did not arrive and the club has not been able to meet its obligations to its creditors," according to David Martín of MARCA. The rule "was clear: the club had to solve its debts" by Tuesday. Instead, the club announced on Tuesday that "it would pay by Wednesday." Now Elche will face sanctions, "including a possible transfer ban during the upcoming window." Once the sanction is announced, Elche will have five days "to present an appeal." If the club is "able to pay off its debts before a verdict is decided, the sanction could be a fine" (MARCA, 4/1). In Madrid, M.H. Marcos reported Elche's players announced on Wednesday that they "will not make public appearances or offer comments until the situation is resolved as a means of protest" (AS, 4/1).
