LFP Demands Compliance From RFEF President Villar In Centralizing TV Rights

Following a meeting of Spanish Football League (LFP) shareholders, the LFP released a statement saying that the shareholders agreed to support the management undertaken by the LFP and, in particular, by President Javier Tebas, aimed at the effective centralization of TV rights and a model for the fair distribution of earnings, through a Royal Decree, as an expression of the will of practically all of the clubs that make up professional football in Spain. The shareholders also requested that the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) comply with what was agreed to at the Mixed RFEF-LFP Commission on March 6. The LFP also condemned the conduct of RFEF President Ángel María Villar for not respecting the agreements that were reached, and in particular, for his conscious and unjustified absence from the meeting called by the Minister of Education on March 26. The statement concluded by saying that the LFP "does not currently feel represented by the President of the RFEF due to his attitude. The LFP and clubs request that he changes his conduct immediately for the sake of Spanish football as a whole, and that he carries out all of the actions necessary to facilitate the passing of the Royal Decree for centralized selling" (LFP). In Madrid, Alfredo Matilla reported Tebas said of whether he has "considered stopping La Liga" if there is no solution, "This has not been discussed. It was considered, but this meeting's purpose was to make clear our position toward Villar and urge him to change. The note that we published is forceful." When asked "what has happened since Feb. 6 when clubs unanimously signed a letter for approval of the Real Decreto," Tebas said, "We want the Real Decreto. This is the same as always. What has changed is that we had been called by the Government to give a definitive push and Villar was absent from a very important meeting" (AS, 3/30).
