Brasileiro Side Botafogo Pushes Stadium Naming Rights Deal On Olympic Sponsors

Brasileiro side Botafogo was "recently caught in a fight" with Rio de Janeiro's city hall to change the name of its stadium, now called the Olympic Nilton Santos stadium, according to Gentile & Konchinski of UOL. But that "could not last for long." With the Olympics in 2016, Botafogo "expects the value of the arena and its naming rights to increase." Botafogo management "has already called upon all official Olympic sponsors" to "begin negotiations" for its stadium's naming rights. Botafogo "wants to make a deal before" the Games as it is "urgently in need of money." Brazil's "economic instability" has caused little business interest to "invest in naming rights, which, until now has not taken off" in the country. Botafogo President Carlos Eduardo Pereira said, "Botafogo is living a very delicate situation and needs money for yesterday. The naming rights is a situation that we have in our hands and we've tried talking with the official sponsors of the Olympics, but the truth is that we haven't had a response until now. The reality of the country doesn't help either, along with the time of year, with investors' funds already intended [elsewhere]." Should an Olympic sponsor "negotiate with Botafogo the inclusion of its name" on the stadium, the new name "will only be used for the Olympics after a negotiation with the IOC" (UOL, 3/26).
