UEFA Hikes Champions League Prize Money To $1.7 Billion For Next Three Seasons

UEFA said that Champions League and Europa League clubs will share more than €1.6B ($1.7B) in prize money from next season "in a huge new boost to their coffers," according to the AFP. The Champions League treasure chest will rise from €1B ($1.09B) now to €1.2B ($1.3B) "for the next three seasons." Europa League clubs "will see their pot increased" from €232M-€380M ($254M-$426M). UEFA General Secretary Gianni Infantino said that with extra "solidarity" payments, UEFA will give out a total of €2.24B ($2.4B) each season from its Champions League and Europa League TV and marketing revenues (AFP, 3/23). NBC's Kyle Bonn wrote the exec committee decided that next year’s Champions League payout "would increase 25%." The Europa League "got an even bigger boost," jumping 61%. Many "have slighted the Europa League for being more of a burden than a gain for many clubs, but with the boost in prize money, that could be offset, giving clubs a new incentive to take the competition seriously." The organization said that "full payout breakdowns would be released next week" (NBC, 3/23).
