Brasileiro Side Flamengo In Talks To Build New Stadium, CEO Says It's A 'Tough Dream'

A clause in the contract between Brasileiro side Flamengo and its home stadium, the Maracanã, that the club's management "supports" is the building of a stadium, according to Nascimento & Barboza of LANCENET. In an agreement between both parties at the beginning of '14, the Maracanã owners "would need to respond" to the possibility of building a small arena at the club's headquarters. The stadium "would be used by Flamengo and paid for by the Maracanã ... in the beginning of the 2016 season, due to the Olympic Games" interrupting the club's ability to host games at the Maracanã. Flamengo President Eduardo Bandeiro de Mello met with Rio de Janeiro Governor Luiz Fernando Pezão on Tuesday to "straighten the agreement for the construction of this temporary structure, and [he] received positive signs from the state's boss" (LANCENET, 3/19). In São Paulo, Mota & Raupp reported the "excitement" surrounding Flamengo's potential new stadium "was halted immediately by [the club's] management." Flamengo CEO Fred Luz said achieving the stadium is a "tough dream." Luz: "Strictly speaking, there is desire, but there is nothing else. We don't have research, we don't have a definite plan yet. The dream to have the stadium, Flamengo has always had. The possibility of not having a stadium in Rio de Janeiro to hold more than 20,000 spectators ... is a bit of a problem. Trying to come up with a solution is a dream, but it is far from viable. There is nothing concrete, it's all speculation. The most possible [solution] is that we don't have one. It's not easy to build something to be ready by February of next year" (GLOBO ESPORTE, 3/19).
