GUILLERMO MARÍN, a friend of LIONEL MESSI's father, JORGE, and the organizer of events for the player's charity foundation, has asked to testify via videoconference from Argentina "in relation to the investigation of the funds raised in 'Messi and Friends vs. The Rest of the World' games." Marín filed a written request with a Madrid judge "saying he is willing to testify from his country by videoconference." Now, "the judge must decide whether to accept this request" (MARCA, 3/16). ... F1 CEO BERNIE ECCLESTONE has been called to testify by Valencia's Superior Court. The court is expected to summon Ecclestone and 13 other witnesses "to present information related to alleged corruption and embezzlement in the awarding of contracts" to hold the '12 F1 race in Valencia (LIBERTAD DIGITAL, 3/16). ... Former Chelsea winger SALOMON KALOU is facing a "huge fine" after reportedly vandalizing the Berlin Wall. The Ivorian, 29, now at Bundesliga club Hertha Berlin, was "apparently filmed" by national broadcaster Rundfunk Berlin-Brandenbury "breaking off a piece off of the wall using a hammer and chisel." The Wall is a "protected monument." Anyone found vandalizing the landmark faces a "hefty fine" of up to €10,000 ($10,600) (London INDEPENDENT, 3/16). ... Hong Kong sprinter SARAH LEE WAI-SZE was crowned the Best of the Best Sports Star for 2014 when the annual Hong Kong sports "Oscars" presentation was held at the Convention and Exhibition Centre in Wan Chai Monday night. Lee won the top honor “for the third year in a row.” In ‘14, “she won two gold medals at the Incheon Asian Games -- a first for a Hong Kong athlete.” Each of the eight Sports Stars winners received a cash award of HK$33,000 ($4,250) while Lee earned an additional HK$55,000 ($7,000). The seven other Sports Stars included windsurfer CHENG KWOK-FAI, rowing gold medalist LOK KWAN-HOI, gymnast SHEK WAI-HUNG, snooker player NG ON-YEE, tenpin bowler WU SIU-HONG and disabled athletes LEUNG YUK-WING and WONG KA-MAN (SOUTH CHINA MORNING POST, 3/16).
