Singapore Named Host Venue For Asia Trophy Featuring Arsenal, Everton, Stoke City

EPL clubs Arsenal, Everton and Stoke City have all agreed to play in this year's Asia Trophy in Singapore in preparation for the '15-16 Premier League season, according to Julian Linden of REUTERS. The three will be joined by a Singapore Select XI for the mid-July knock-out tournament at Singapore's new 55,000-seat National Stadium. EPL CEO Richard Scudamore said, "We are very excited to bring the Barclays Asia Trophy to Singapore for the first time." The Asia Trophy is the only Premier League-affiliated competition to be held outside of England. It has been held every two years since '03. The two previous editions of the biennial tournament were held in Hong Kong but the '13 event, won by Man City, was "marred by torrential rain," with the semifinals reduced to 80 minutes each. Singapore has never hosted the tournament before but the Southeast Asian city-state "got the nod after the completion of the billion-dollar Sports Hub complex, which also hosts the annual end-of-season championship for women's tennis" (REUTERS, 3/11). In Singapore, Jonathan Wong reported this year's edition "will be played over two match days, July 15 (Wednesday) and July 18 (Saturday), with two games on each day." The four-team knockout competition will be played at the National Stadium. Local football is "also set to benefit with the EPL set to run a series of coaching initiatives" and knowledge-transfer programs in July. The Singapore Select XI will also consist "mainly of players from the Singapore national team" (STRAITS TIMES, 3/11). ESPN reported FA of Singapore President Zainudin Nordin said the tournament will "provide a platform for Singapore's best players to rub shoulders against the cream of the Premier League." Nordin: "Fans in Singapore will be keen to see how players from our Lions fare against the top-class opposition they see live on television week in and out during the Premier League season" (ESPN, 3/11).

WORRYING SIGN FOR HK: The SOUTH CHINA MORNING POST reported Singapore's "shiny new Sports Hub has beaten Hong Kong to another major event." The Hong Kong Stadium pitch "will be relaid after this month's Hong Kong Sevens, meaning HK was never in the running for this year's Asia Trophy," but it will still be a "worrying sign" for the Hong Kong FA, which may wonder if the tournament "will ever return should Singapore put on a good show." Hong Kong's "long-awaited Sports Hub at Kai Tak continues to stall and has never got beyond the planning stage" (SCMP, 3/11).
