Spanish Senate Approves Of Amendment To Beef Up Anti-Piracy Measures

The Spanish Senate's Justice Commission on Tuesday approved an amendment to the Penal Code that "will allow legal instruments to prosecute with more speed and guarantees piracy in football," according to AS. The subject "has been a priority" for the Spanish Football League (LFP) since Javier Tebas took over as president. The offices of Hernández de Tejada calculate that piracy "steals 500,000 subscribers per year" in Spain. Tebas has previously said, "We are the most pirated country in the world, it seems that those who do not do it are foolish." The LFP has been working since '13 to "limit illegal broadcasts, with special attention to Internet links." At the LFP, "it is believed that a very dangerous culture has been created and not even the Government has taken it seriously." The amendment approved in the Senate "is a good first step" (AS, 3/5).
