Executive Transactions

Int'l Table Tennis Federation President THOMAS WEIKERT "stepped down" as the president of the German Int'l Table Tennis Association (DTTB). The German, who has been in the position for 10 years, "will officially end his tenure" on March 10 and will be replaced by MICHAEL GEIGER as interim president of the DTTB until elections are held later this year (ITTF). ... TIM SHERWOOD "has been appointed manager" at Aston Villa, signing a contract at the club until summer 2018. Villa sacked PAUL LAMBERT on Wednesday "after a winless run of 10 league games" in which it scored just two goals. The appointment comes just two days after first-team coach SCOTT MARSHALL and goalkeeping coach ANDY MARSHALL "took temporary charge following Lambert's dismissal." Sherwood "has been linked with a number of jobs since leaving Spurs, most recently the QPR post," when he looked set to be named as HARRY REDKNAPP's successor (BBC, 2/14). ... Iran football club Tractor Sazi named TONY OLIVEIRA its head coach on Saturday night. The 68-year-old Portuguese “took charge of the Tabriz-based team on a one-and-a-half-year deal.” The monetary terms of the contract were not disclosed (XINHUA, 2/15).

BEARD RESIGNS
: Queens Park Rangers CEO PHILIP BEARD "resigned from QPR's Board of Directors and will leave the club" on March 15 after three-and-a-half years at the club. Beard joined in Aug. '11 shortly after Chair TONY FERNANDES "took it over." He "had previously worked for American company AEG and on London's Olympic and Paralympic bid" (SKY SPORTS, 2/13). Beard resigned "after coming to feel marginalised" by the promotion of LES FERDINAND to the post of director of football. Ferdinand’s elevation "also reflects a loss of confidence in Beard by the club’s owners" (London GUARDIAN, 2/13).
