EPL side Aston Villa has sacked Manager PAUL LAMBERT after the club "dropped into the Premier League relegation zone." Villa lost 2-0 to "fellow strugglers" Hull City on Tuesday, its 10th league game without a win. The club's "haul of 12 league goals this season is the lowest total after 25 games in Premier League history." First-team coach SCOTT MARSHALL and goalkeeping coach ANDY MARSHALL "have taken caretaker charge" (BBC, 2/11). ... Former Magpie LUKE BALL has "quit his post" as president of the Australian Football League Players' Association, with Fremantle's MATTHEW PAVLICH "tipped to assume the role." Ball, who has accepted a part-time role at the AFL, "was expected to stay on and lead" the AFLPA into the "next round of pay negotiations with league chiefs" (HERALD SUN, 2/11). ... Football Federation Australia CEO DAVID GALLOP’s new, extended contract will see him “at the helm in Darlinghurst until the end of 2018.” That “takes the CEO through the next World Cup cycle -- the tournament is due to be staged in Russia in 2018 -- and will have him deeply involved” in planning football's strategy across a range of broadcast negotiations and expansion talks over the next three years (THE AGE, 2/11).
