Images Of Five Finalists' Designs For 12,000-Seat Bristol Arena Unveiled

Images "have been revealed of the five finalists' design in the RIBA competition for a 12,000-capacity venue in central Bristol," according to Laura Mark of ARCHITECTS JOURNAL. Populous, working with Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios and Buro Happold, and consortia headed by Grimshaw, Bilbao Arena designer IDOM, Sweden's White Arkitkter and Wilkinson Eyre "are all vying for the prized job." The five shortlisted multi-disciplinary design teams are:

  • Grimshaw, MANICA Architecture, Thornton Tomasetti, M-E Engineers and Neil Woodger Acoustics
  • IDOM (in collaboration with Foreman Roberts and Nagata Acoustics)
  • Populous/Feilden Clegg Bradley/Buro Happold/Vanguardia
  • White Arkitekter with Arup
  • Wilkinson Eyre with Arup
The £90M ($136M) council-backed scheme "will occupy a former diesel depot site known as 'Arena Island' next to Temple Meads railway station and is being masterplanned by Allies and Morrison" (AJ, 1/29). To see the final design propoals, click here.
