Long-serving adidas CEO HERBERT HAINER has "no intention of stepping down despite criticism." Hainer: "If I no longer had the ambition and the energy, and the firm belief that I can bring the company further forward, then I would stop immediately." He admitted he had made mistakes, "such as rolling out too many new golf products just as the market was contracting, but said he had been surprised by the personal criticism." Hainer added, "Suddenly, everything that was right for 12 years, was wrong" (REUTERS, 1/28). ... Former ManU assistant MIKE PHELAN has agreed to join EPL side Hull City as assistant manager. He will "fill the shoes" of recently departed STEVE AGNEW, who moved to Middlesborough. Phelan will join the club Sunday due to the terms of the agreement after leaving League Championship side Norwich City (VAVEL, 1/27). ... Premiership rugby side Sale Sharks and former England winger MARK CUETO has announced he will retire at the end of the season. The 35-year-old is the Premiership's "all-time leading try scorer with 87 but has crossed only once this season" (BBC, 1/28). ... Former League One side Sheffield United footballer CHED EVANS submitted “fresh evidence” which he hopes will get his rape conviction overturned. The submission to the Criminal Cases Review Commission was made on Evans’ behalf on Friday, according to a statement on his website which claims the details “strengthen” his case (PA, 1/28). ... Two-time Gold Medal winning hockey Olympian JASWANT SINGH RAJPUT died on Tuesday “following a prolonged illness. He “was 88.” Paying "glowing tributes" to Jaswant, former Olympian GURBUX SINGH said, "He was part of the galaxy of stars that made India proud” (INDIAN EXPRESS, 1/28). ... England cricketer STUART BROAD apologized “for his controversial tweet about the minimum wage, bizarrely using the size of the planet to explain why he posted it.” Broad “whipped up a storm” on Monday afternoon. His tweet, which was later deleted, read, "I've heard if you earn minimum wage in England you're in the top 10 per cent earners in the World. #stay #humble.” Broad apologized “using a somewhat bizarre reasoning that it was due to his interest in the size of the planet.” Broad posted on Twitter, "Clarifying my earlier tweet, I merely wanted to emphasise my amazement at just how big the world is” (London INDEPENDENT, 1/28). ... New Zealand Olympian KRIS GEMMELL "has had three months taken off his ban for failing to meet anti-doping requirements." Gemmell, 37, "failed to comply with the athlete whereabouts programme." He "was handed a 15-month ban by the Court of Arbitration for Sport in December" (3 NEWS, 1/28). ... South Korean slugger PARK BYUNG-HO, "hoping to reach" the MLB next year, has signed on with Octagon. The agency "has been in touch with at least two MLB clubs, the Oakland Athletics and the Boston Red Sox" (YONHAP, 1/28).

RONALDO BANNED: Real Madrid's CRISTIANO RONALDO "has been given a two-match ban following his dismissal for kicking out at an opponent during their La Liga clash with Cordoba." Ronaldo "was unable to make an impact in the match and his frustration saw him first lash out with his hand" at JOSE CRESPO, which the referee missed, and then minutes later kick out at EDIMAR for which he was sent off (REUTERS, 1/28).

MOURINHO FINED: Chelsea Manager JOSE MOURINHO has been fined £25,000 ($38,000) for comments claiming there is a "campaign" to influence referees' decisions against his Chelsea side. The FA ruled Mourinho's quotes were "improper and brought the game into disrepute." But Mourinho, "who was warned about his future conduct, was cleared of implying bias by referees" (BBC, 1/28).
