Media Notes: Telefónica Could Drop Canal+ Acquisition Due To CNMC Approval Conditions

Tough approval conditions from the Spanish competition watchdog CNMC "could see an end" to Telefónica’s acquisition of Canal+. Negotiations between CNMC and Telefónica "are reportedly about to collapse since the telco will not agree to share content and TV rights with rivals (Orange, Vodafone-ONO) as the CNMC is demanding to give its go-ahead to the acquisition" (ADVANCED TELEVISION, 1/23). ... Big time boxing "will make a welcome return to terrestrial television when ITV broadcasts Carl Frampton’s defence of his world title in Belfast on February 28th." The "hard old game has been striving for a way to reclaim the huge free-to-air box-office appeal for five years" (London DAILY MAIL, 1/27). ... League One side Notts County has "taken the drastic step of banning an entire country from using the club's official Facebook page after being bombarded with messages about new signing, Hungarian striker Balint Bajner." Notts County Head of Media Jamie Dixon said the club's Facebook page had seen an "unprecedented" spike in traffic on Tuesday, with some 1,700 new likes in the space of two days (ESPN, 1/26). ... Universal Sports Network and the Int'l Cycling Union (UCI) announced a multi-year extension of their existing agreement to air the UCI’s major cycling events in the U.S. through '18. The deal gives Universal Sports multiplatform rights, including exclusive TV and digital rights, to the UCI Road World Championships and UCI World Championship and World Cup events in track cycling, BMX, mountain bike and cyclo-cross (UCI).

Ads on Sky Sports "feature Mourinho giving an inspirational speech to football fans everywhere, set against emotive scenes of the highs and lows of the game." The ad, produced directly for the client without an ad agency, "was directed by Emil Moller for B-Reel, and edited by Phil Hignett at Marshall St." (CAMPAIGN LIVE, 1/27).
