League Notes: NBA To Celebrate Chinese New Year By Carrying 56 Games Live In China

The NBA announced that it will celebrate the Chinese New Year from Feb. 19-March 4 with 56 live games broadcast and streamed in China. The celebration will showcase 27 of the 30 NBA teams; the debut of "Surprise Door," the first NBA Chinese New Year TV spot; and the tip-off of the Chinese New Year Celebration Season of Giving initiative to support underprivileged communities in China. Teams for the first time will wear specially designed Chinese New Year uniforms. The Golden State Warriors will wear the uniform Feb. 20 against the San Antonio Spurs, while the Houston Rockets will wear theirs the next day against the Toronto Raptors. Both teams will wear the uniforms a combined seven times (NBA).

ARMSTRONG SPEAKS OUT: Former cyclist Lance Armstrong believes Int'l Cycling Union (UCI) President Brian Cookson "has not delivered on his campaign promises since taking over" the UCI. Cookson beat Ireland's Pat McQuaid in a "bitter election." Armstrong: "If McQuaid had made the same decisions Cookson has made in his first year, he would have been lynched." Armstrong cited the decisions to "rush" through Team Sky's request for Chris Froome to get "emergency steroid treatment for asthma after the Tour de Romandie's prologue and Cookson's handling of the Astana affair as failures to signal a new direction at the top of the sport" (BBC, 1/27). ... Paul O'Sullivan, the lawyer representing cobalt trainer Darren Smith, has "put forward a simple reason" why his client should not be charged. O'Sullivan said, "The stewards' case is cobalt is permissible until it occurs at excessive levels. When it occurs at excessive levels, it goes from permissible to prohibited. The flaw to that argument is no trainer at the relevant time knew what excessive levels were. What was 'excessive' at the time? When is it OK and when is it not OK?" (Sydney DAILY TELEGRAPH, 1/27).
