GARY STREET, "who led England's Women to 2014 World Cup victory, has left his role as head coach." The Rugby Football Union said that "the decision was made by mutual consent." Head of Women's Performance NICKY PONSFORD "will take charge of the team for the Six Nations" along with Street's assistant coach GRAHAM SMITH. Former England player MAGGIE ALPHONSI said, "Since I got involved in the game, Gary's been the most prominent figure in women's rugby" (BBC, 1/26). ... JOHN CARVER will be confirmed as EPL side Newcastle “head coach” for the season. ALAN PARDEW's No. 2 will take charge of the team for the final 16 games of the Premier League season, "after the club's month-long search for a new boss flopped." Newcastle had 80 applicants for the “head coach” role, but was "unable to lure" its top choices including REMY GARDE, Derby's STEVE MCCLAREN and Ajax's FRANK DE BOER (London DAILY MIRROR, 1/26).
