Only Two AFL Players Earn More Than A$1M As Clubs Spread Wealth Among Middle-Class

Australian Football League clubs "are spreading more of the wealth among its middle-class," according to Jay Clark of the HERALD SUN. Only two players earned A$1M ($810,000) last season -- believed to be Gold Coast captain Gary Ablett and Greater Western Sydney high-priced recruit Tom Scully. The average salary for a listed player in '14 was A$283,029, increasing from A$265,179 in '13. Clubs "are instead sharing more money among its middle tier of players," with a 41% increase of players in the A$500,001- A$700,000 bracket (HERALD SUN, 1/22). In Melbourne, Ronny Lerner reported it is an "interesting indication of how clubs manipulate and structure player contracts to fit under the salary cap." In a sign of how much the game has grown in recent years, gross player payments "have more than tripled" from '98 (A$62,186,000) to '14 (A$188,944,174). Total "payments from additional services agreements for players also jumped" by almost A$2.5M from A$13,874,676 ('13) to A$16,237,924 ('14) (THE AGE, 1/22).
