EPL Side Swansea City Exploring Deal To Take Control Of 20,800-Seat Liberty Stadium

EPL side Swansea City is preparing to buy the Liberty Stadium, according to Chris Wathan of WALES ONLINE. The Swans, "boosted by finances from their ongoing stay in the Premier League, are thought to have explored opportunities of a deal to take the ownership away from the local council and into the club's hands." And it "could open the door for further expansion of the current 20,800 venue -- as well as potentially new lucrative naming rights." The Swans moved into the Liberty 10 years ago this summer after 93 years at the Vetch Field. The club's fortunes have "changed dramatically since that time" with the side now able to consider proposals to "purchase the stadium outright putting them in a greater position for future naming-rights deals, currently held by Liberty Properties" (WALES ONLINE, 1/21). The SOUTH WALES EVENING POST reported any deal for the Liberty is "likely to be worth somewhere between" £20M ($30M) and £25M ($38M) -- "roughly what the stadium cost to build." Any purchase will reportedly "hinge on the club attracting significant investment from overseas." Swansea's owners have held talks over potential invesment with "American money men John Moores and Charles Noell," who were previously involved with Major League Baseball club San Diego Padres (SOUTH WALES EVENING POST, 1/21).
