FIFA sponsors "are to be targeted by campaigners lobbying for reform of the world governing body," according to RTE.
The strategy emerged at the "New FIFA Now" summit in Brussels, the first organized campaign "to challenge the leadership of FIFA in its 111-year history."
Former FA Chair David Triesman, who has previously made allegations in Parliament about FIFA corruption surrounding the bidding for the 2018 and 2022 World Cups, "attacked the culture and governance of FIFA" under President Sepp Blatter. Triesman: "It seems incomprehensible that the sponsors of FIFA should allow their brands to be entangled in this -- they themselves have to set higher standards." Jaimie Fuller, the chairman of the Skins sportswear company "who has previously campaigned for reform of cycling, announced he will be writing to all FIFA sponsors." Fuller: "The letter I have written to them will be published on our website and even if it's going to be a matter of drip, drip, drip it will be nice to think there will be some progress in getting them to come to the party. I understand the commercial realities and the position they are in but it's not going to stop us" (RTE, 1/21).
