Australian broadcaster RICHIE BENAUD is "unlikely to make a hoped-for return to the commentary box for his hometown Sydney Cricket Ground Test." The Nine Network "left the door open for the 84-year-old commentary doyen to return for the fourth Test against India." Nine Head of Sport STEVE CRAWLEY, however, confirmed on Monday that Benaud "had not been in touch about working at the Test and he accepted it wouldn't happen" (AAP, 1/4). ... Russian football club Anzhi Makhachkala player GASAN MAGOMEDOV, 20, "has been shot dead near his home in Russia's volatile North Caucasus." He was driving into his home village on Saturday night "when his car was sprayed with machine-gun fire and he died from his wounds while being transported to hospital" (SHANGHAI DAILY, 1/5). ... Cyclist BRADLEY WIGGINS has signed a contract extension with Team Sky until "up to and including this year's Paris-Roubaix." The move will see him "target the one-day Classic in April before he makes the move to the track as he builds towards the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio." Wiggins is "also set to target the Hour Record later this year but Paris-Roubaix remains the main focus for the upcoming months" (CYCLING NEWS, 1/5).
