French National Rugby League Launches Call For Bids For TV Rights To Top 14, Pro D2

The French National Rugby League (LNR), which holds the rights for Top 14 and Pro D2 rugby, "launched Friday its call for tenders for the TV broadcasting rights of its competitions," according to L’EQUIPE. For Top 14, there will be two “official broadcaster” packs and four “premium” packs. The Top 14 final is "subject to a special procedure" since the statement from the LNR specifies that “the live broadcasting rights to the final are included in the tender and are offered independently." The 2015 final for use on a free channel "is also possible.” These rights cover four seasons, from the ’15-16 season through the ’18-19 season. The overall reserve price of the tender is €71M ($86.8M) per season. Pro D2 "also has a tendering program and the LNR plans to shake up" the broadcasting. The LNR said, “By proposing new slots on Thursday and Friday, outside the usual weekend programming, and in opening the consultation over five seasons, the LNR intends to permit broadcasters to extend over the long term and to create clearly identified Pro D2 ‘meetings.’” The invitation to tender is "only valid for a single broadcaster and for the entire competition." Offers for the two competitions must be made before Jan. 19 (L’EQUIPE, 12/18).
