League Notes: F1 CEO Bernie Ecclestone Tells Teams To Cut Costs

F1 CEO Bernie Ecclestone said Friday night that "he is determined to force through cost cuts on Formula One teams after the failure of talks on Thursday." Two teams -- Caterham and Marussia -- "have gone bust in the past two months and Ecclestone said their demise has been fuelled by this year’s switch from 2.4-litre V8 engines to 1.6-litre V6 turbos," which cost double at around £30M ($47M) annually. Ecclestone attempted to engineer a return of the V8 engines in '16, but he said, “Nobody wants to change the engines, they are all happy" (London INDEPENDENT, 12/19). ... Racing NSW CEO Peter V'landys described as "complete rubbish" claims Racing NSW is still "yet to foot the Werribee quarantine bill" from Gordon Lord Byron's visit for The Championships this year at the same time the int'l scouting mission for next year's showpiece "heats up." Racing Victoria "is squabbling with its northern counterpart over an alleged outstanding fee," believed to be about A$20,000 ($16,290), from Byron's two-week quarantine stay at Werribee in March. V'landys said, "It's complete rubbish and muck-raking. We were quoted an amount and have paid the amount in total. They've asked for more and naturally we've asked for more documentation why" (SYDNEY MORNING HERALD, 12/21). ... The Japan FA "sent a delegation to Spain to conduct a probe into the match-fixing scandal that has embroiled national team coach Javier Aguirre." The JFA have confirmed that Aguirre "will remain in charge for the next month's Asian Cup in Australia despite being one of 41 people accused by Spain's anti-corruption prosecutors of rigging a match in 2011." JFA President Kuniya Daini: "I have sent (a mission) to Spain and from now on we will have information coming in" (REUTERS, 12/21). ... The French Football League (LFP) announced Thursday that Ligue 1 will begin next season on Aug. 7 and finish on May 14, 2016. The schedule, “which must still be approved by the French Football Federation, also provides for a winter break” from Dec. 21, 2015-Jan. 1, 2016. The final of the League Cup is scheduled for April 23, 2016 (AFP, 12/19).
