Lawn Tennis Association Cut To National League Prize Funding Sparks Fury

The "austerity regime" at the Lawn Tennis Association "is coming under renewed fire after more than a dozen of the country’s leading clubs signed an open letter objecting to cuts in prize-money for the national league -- otherwise known as AEGON Team Tennis," according to Simon Briggs of the London TELEGRAPH. With matrix funding already having been withdrawn from juniors and the bonus scheme reduced for adult professionals, the LTA "has also revealed that it is taking an axe to the money on offer in British tour events." These smaller tournaments fit in beneath the Int'l Tennis Federation’s Futures events, "and are credited by many coaches with keeping aspiring professionals in the game." But their value is to fall from £5,600 ($8,750) per tournament this year to £4,300 ($6,720) next season. It "is the downgrading of the national league, however, that has most enraged the regions," with the '14 prize fund of £100,000 ($156,270) being reduced to just £22,500 ($35,160) next year (TELEGRAPH, 12/18).
