The World Anti-Doping agency said on Wednesday that "it will not appeal against a three-month ban imposed against China’s controversial double Olympic swimming champion" SUN YANG, but will warn China over the case. WADA "considered action after Sun failed a doping test in May and was banned for three months by the Chinese federation but it was only announced in November after Sun had won more titles at the Asian Games" (AFP, 12/18). ... Bundesliga side Borussia Dortmund player MARCO REUS has been fined £427,000 ($668,400) for a series of driving offenses -- "the highest sanction of its kind ever handed out in the country." The 25-year-old Germany forward "was allegedly stopped by police several times and received speeding tickets on at least five occasions since 2011, before the authorities realised he had been driving without a licence ever since" (REUTERS, 12/18). ... Olympic wrestling Gold Medalist STEEVE GUENOT "was banned for a year by the French anti-doping agency (AFLD) on Thursday for missing doping controls" (AFP, 12/18). ... Six-time Olympic Gold Medalist USAIN BOLT said reports suggesting the 200m is among five athletics events at risk of being cut from the Olympic program are “ridiculous” and it must not be allowed to happen. Bolt: "Normally I’m not a controversial person but I think that’s just stupid. Personally, track and field is the highlight of the Olympics every edition, that’s not even a question" (REUTERS, 12/17). ... U.S. sprinter TYSON GAY's former coach JON DRUMMOND "has been banned for eight years" by the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency. Drummond, a former Olympic relay Gold Medalist, "was found to have possessed, trafficked and administered banned drugs to an athlete he coached" (BBC, 12/17). ... Former Barcelona and France defender ERIC ABIDAL "retired from football after playing his last game for Olympiacos in Wednesday's 2-0 Greek league win over Panionios." Abidal "will confirm his decision at a press conference on Friday" (ITV, 12/18). ... IAAF world female athlete of the year VALERIE ADAMS "won the New Zealand Olympic Committee's Lonsdale Cup." Shot put champion Adams "secured the award for an unprecedented fifth time after remaining unbeaten throughout 2014" (RADIO NEW ZEALAND, 12/18). ... Top 14 rugby side Toulon player DELON ARMITAGE "has been banned for 12 weeks for using foul and abusive language towards Leicester Tigers fans after the European Rugby Champions Cup match between the two clubs." Armitage "pleaded not guilty at a misconduct hearing." But a disciplinary committee ruled he had "conducted himself in an unsportsmanlike manner," despite accepting he was "provoked" (BBC, 12/17).
