Australian Pubs Without Victorian, NSW Race Vision Amid TVN-Sky Dispute

Hundreds of Australia's clubs and pubs "are without Victorian and New South Wales race vision, and punter frustration is expected to peak at the weekend," according to Stewart & Manley of the HERALD SUN. Victorian TABs without TVN vision "were deserted by customers on Thursday." None of the 328 venues owned by Bruce Mathieson's Australian Leisure and Hospitality Group "are signed up to TVN, the sole provider of Victorian vision after Sky lost its rights on Wednesday." Australian Hotels Association CEO Brian Kearney said that he had received "few reports of punter frustration but predicted they would come." Kearney: "There has been no great big impact as yet that we are aware of, but I'd expect the rubber to hit the road on the weekend" (HERALD SUN, 12/18). In Sydney, Adam Pengilly reported the feud between "warring broadcasters TVN and Sky Channel is poised to drag on into the new year" after wagering took an "immediate hit on the first day of the subscription channel blackout." The parties were "back at the negotiating table on Thursday, desperately trying to stitch up short-term agreements to have TVN's vision beamed into pubs and clubs as well as TAB outlets in the two states." But punters "voted with their wallets after being forced to watch a still graphic and listen to audio from races at Wyong and Seymour at outlets which usually show the Tabcorp-owned Sky's vision." A "temporary solution over that problem is imminent," but the TVN-Sky impasse will reportedly "drag on into 2015 despite suggestions." It is likely to "trigger more pain for the racing industry in the turnover stakes," with Racing NSW CEO Peter V'landys saying, "I'm very concerned because wagering is our major source of revenue" (SYDNEY MORNING HERALD, 12/18).
